Walkie Talkie: Fantastic Fungal Forage

St Thomas

There’s more to fungi than meets the eye! From keeping our soils healthy, to producing medicines, to brewing beer – fungi play a vital role in our world. But there’s still so much to discover about this hidden kingdom.

Joining us at the Love St Thomas Summer Festival from the University of Exeter is Professor Mark Ramsdale, Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology. Mark will guide you on a journey through the fascinating connections between fungi, plants, animals, and humans.

As we enjoy a gentle walk around St Thomas, we’ll explore the many ways fungi influence our daily lives and environment, often without us even realising.

This will be a relaxed and informal event with plenty of opportunities to meet others, chat, share your thoughts, and ask questions.

We will meet outside St Thomas Parish Church’s entrance (the one facing Cowick Street) from 12.45 PM. The walk will end here, too.

We will walk a circular, paved, and accessible route. We won’t be walking further than 1 km and expect the event to run for around 75 minutes. If you’d like to attend, but don’t have a car, or would like to chat through accessibility, get in touch with us at contact@agile-rabbit.com. We’re happy to advise you further.

This event is part of Love St Thomas Summer Festival. Download the full Line-Up below.

Mark is Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology. His main research focus is understanding stress and programmed cell death responses exhibited by fungi (in particular Candida albicans). This is important since fungal diseases of man have assumed great significance due to changes in the demographic status of the human population, changes in the management practices for chronic health conditions, and the increased use of immunocompromising agents in medicine.
